Hosted in the iconic location of Brixton Village, our inaugural exhibition FINDING ARTEMISIA / Un-Heroic Traditions is an exhibition of new works created by artist and BAHP founder Luisa-Maria MacCormack that explore the complex and layered history of our visual narratives of gender-based violence.

These drawings are the culmination of six months of intense work in collaboration with six women, all of whom have had personal experiences with gender-based violence. Inspired by the powerful archetypes taken from the oeuvre of Artemisia Gentileschi, a C16th female artist whose long-awaited exhibition arrives at the National Gallery next year.

This exhibition offers a direct challenge to the outdated tradition of the ‘silent muse’ through the visual and narrative empowerment of each sitter. Rather than being recorded as a mute object of display, the process of creating these works is closely collaborative, and hinges on the dynamic and trust between artist and model. Thus the traditional role of the model and artist is reversed; the model speaks through the artist’s work, sharing the narratives of their own lives, the abuse that they encountered, and their processes of healing and recovery.
